Kelvin Adjustable Dimming A19 LED Lamp

One of the interesting products that I saw today was a dimming A19 lamp from Ledirect Lighting.  Their “patented KAD Technology (Kelvin Adjustable Dimming) technology simulated the color tone of incandescent light bulbs by adjusting the color from a warm white to a warm flame color as the lamp dims.”

The effect is is quite interesting. I have attached some pictures to show the different stages of dimming.  If I can ever get the video upload figured out, I will add that as well.

Shift in LED Lighting

The difference between last years Lightfair and this year is quite substantial. Last year LED was more of a buzzword and new technology. It seemed like anyone would throw a few leds into a lamp without any consideration for color, CRI or control. They would point their lamps into your eyes to show you how bright they were.

My retinas seem to have healed and things are much different this year. Dimmable LEDs seem to be the norm. Manufacturers have much better control over the color temperature, CRI, efficacy and overall design. The lamps are finally becoming more of the type of light our eyes are custom to seeing and much less blinding.

Great progress by all and the consumer ultimately wins here.

Technical side note

As the proud parent of a 2.5 year old, I fully understand the uncontrolable desire of the child (and sometimes parents too) to scream.

This is the reason I recommend in ear headphones for ALL flights. Being on a packed Southwest 737 from Orlando to Chicago, my $15 investment in Skull Candy in ear headphones from Target was WELL woth my investment!

Now on to Vegas!

Lightfair 2010

Green Lighting Supply is headed to Las Vegas for Lightfair 2010. I am sure we will see some great products. Keep checking back as we will have highlights from this years show.

According to Inhabitat.com, the Mars Chocolate factory in Hackettstown, New Jersey “flipped the switch on their shiny new 2MR photovoltaic system.”  The solar array/panels are located on an 18 acre lot that was a vacant lot and now generates one-fifth of the factory’s electricity needs!  Head over to Inhabitat.com for the full read.

This article from treehugger.com is about two years old, but it answers many of the common questions and concerns about CFLs.  It addresses the energy usage, how CFLs work and most importantly, a detailed explanation of the issue of mercury in CFLs.  It is a great, short read, so head over to treehugger.com to view the article.

LEDnovation makes progress in LED A shaped lamps

LEDnovations A19 LED Light Bulb

LEDnovation has introduced some pretty impressive lamps in the quest to replace the traditional shaped light bulb (A19).  The lamps are a direct replacement for incandescent and CFL optimized for down light applications.  They are 3500K which is a little cooler than traditional incandescent, but they have achieved a CRI of 85 for both lamps and deliver 600 Lumens consuming just 7.6W for the 60W equivalent.  This translates into a typical efficiency of 79 Lumens/Watt.  The 75W boasts 700 Lumens consuming 9.8W, resulting in 71 Lumens/Watt.

Simplified Lighting Terminology

The recognized authority on Lighting in North America is the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. Formal Definitions of many of the terms below can be found in the IESNA Lighting Handbook, 9th Edition 2000.

The definitions below are simpler and hopefully more understandable for those who spend less than 100% of their professional lives in lighting. They were written by a Fellow of the IES so they have some validity! (more…)
